What will you find when you join us for worship on a Sunday morning? First of all, you will find a welcoming smile!
You will also find lots of singing, which is incorporated throughout our service. We are also blessed with a rotating team of five talented musicians who play the piano and organ. We use two hymnbooks: Voices United and More Voices.
During our worship we value energy and openness ... words and silence ... stories from the Bible and the stories of our own lives ... praise and lament.
Our worship services include prayers, hymns both old and new, a time with young people, scripture readings (based on the Revised Common Lectionary), sermons that relate the Bible to our contemporary life and culture, and offering. Sunday School is offered following the time with youth, when the children continue their worship outside the sanctuary.
On Communion Sundays (which happen once a month) the children rejoin the adults and we are invited to celebrate this sacrament together.
Our prayers include time for silent prayers, as well as prayer requests for concerns of our individual lives and those of our community and our world.
During the year we hold a number of special services, including a Blue Christmas service during Advent, and special Holy Week services including Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.
Messy Church is a ministry here at First United.
Messy Church is a mid-week worship aimed at families (although anyone is welcome!) and all children must come with an adult. Messy church happens usually on the first Wednesday of the month: we gather around 5:15 with supper and wrap up by 7-o'clock.
Messy Church is Christ-centred, relaxed, participative and fun! Messy church includes crafts, singing, a story, prayer and supper! Some of our crafts and activities have included: a Hallelujah conga line, Resurrection Gardens (see pictures from just-planted to one week later), Pig Swill (see picture below), Primordial Slime, and Pipe Cleaner Bugs.
We also include a Messy Church Take-Home sheet with a prayer and activity you can enjoy at home until our next gathering.
Our Messy Church schedule from now until the summer breaks is: May 4: Pentecost and the Holy Spirit. June 1: Faith Olympics. Hope to see you at Messy Church!
